How I Love Christmas

I love christmas. I don’t know why but everytime christmas is near I feel great. I’m not a Christian and of course I don’t celebrate christmas as Christians do but somehow I just feel the excitement. One thing for sure christmas means a long holiday. It’s a long excitement, when christmas passes we still have new year to celebrate. I can’t think of anyone who hates a long holiday, a time when I can relax my mind and do a lot of stupid and unnecessary things. A time when my family and I could share a lot of beautiful and memorable stories.
The second good thing about Christmas is because christmas means good movies. Since I’m a big fan of movies, christmas is the moment when I can have a hot cup of chocolate on my left hand and a snack on my right hand while sitting in front of my big screen TV watching Home Alone. You know, that movie you always see during christmas time, I mean always. Home Alone 1 and Home Alone 2 are the only movies that people feel they need to watch every christmas, and although we’ve seen Macaulay Culkin over and over again (some people actually memorize the whole two movies) we still laugh so hard when his character trick and trap the two stupid burglars. Not just a lot of great movies I can watch on TV but movie theatres also have topnotch movies I always can’t wait to enjoy. And what’s better than watching a good movie with someone you love and care?
The third good thing about christmas is that christmas is all about shopping. Women know this part best. Well, in America Thanksgiving Day may offer better shopping experience but stores still give great discounts during christmas time (before and after). And since christmas is about giving presents to your loved ones malls and outlets are packed with people trying to find the right gifts for their children, relatives, and families. It is always a wonderful view for me to see people give out their love for the ones they really care about. It is always a wonderful view to see a wife choose a perfect christmas gift for her husband, she spends so much effort in saving some money and checking out several possible gifts at countless stores just to make her husband happy. The same kind of view I used to see in Jakarta everytime lebaran was few days away where a mother would’ve been so confused trying to select a perfect baju koko for her son to wear on Eid ul-Fitr.
Those three things I like the most about christmas conclude one thing: Happiness. It’s all about being happy. It’s not christmas if you don’t feel happy and it’s not christmas if you don’t try to make others happy. As Muslims are encouraged (obligated) to make others happy on Eid ul-Fitr, Christians are also encouraged to make their loved ones feel important and blessed. The joyful sensation of christmas could be unforeseen sometimes, I had been angry on a particular issue when I started writing this article but somehow my feeling dramatically changed as I was writing my first paragraph and decided to make a peaceful agreement with myself. I guess that is how big the power of christmas is.
